These images were taken in Arizona and Southern California, all less than 20 miles from the border with Mexico, and some on Native American reservation land. The roadside markers, often called descansos, or "resting places" are a form of folk art that commemorate deaths from automobile accidents. Their frequency in the border vicinity suggests that some memorials mark the death of immigrants crossing the border. Roadside shrines dedicated to Catholic saints are also common in the region.
